The main features of the
guides are all linked to one objective – to help those with limited
experience/ fitness/ time to complete some/ all of the 214 ‘Wainwrights’ in the Lake District. The main features include: ·
Clear, precise and
easy-to-follow directions ·
Realistic timings,
based on a gentle pace – with ‘Estimated Times of Arrival’ for each stage,
and built-in rest times ·
Escape routes
indicated (where they exist) – in case the weather deteriorates, or you find
that you have fallen significantly behind the ETAs
given in the guide ·
Approximate
compass bearings are given where there are significant changes of direction,
or where there are several paths to choose from – in case visibility worsens,
and to help improve basic navigation skills In addition, photographs, with
direction arrows, are included to show where to go when the route on the
ground isn’t always clear or straightforward: From: KESWICK 1 – D. The Bannerdale
Horseshoe. 6. …….-
the path then veers to the L. to the Glenderamachin
col. Go round, then take the FIRST faint grassy path to the L. (1750):
Photos
are also given to confirm that you’ve arrived at the correct place, giving
that extra feeling of confidence (either for you or those in your group!)
that you’re not lost: From: KESWICK 1 – B. Skiddaw Little Man: 4. ……On
reaching the fence, the path comes to a gate and stile – arrowed &
signed: ‘Skiddaw Summit’. ETA: 12.45 Take
a 5 min. break. 5. Don’t go through the fence/gate – instead go L. (2840)
from the main path, away from the fence, to go up – quite steeply – on the
clear path ahead:
